Kell Park

History

History of Kell Park

Kell Park is a park in Albany situated next near Lucas Creek and the reserves history is tied to the history of the greater Albany area. In 1845 the area was named Lucas Creek after a Flax Miller called Daniel Lucas. Lucas was a whaler who came ashore and became a flax trader; the flax was collected in the area and taken from the wharf to Auckland. The name of the area was later changed to Albany, however the creek itself's name remained the same. Additionally, around the Albany Village area, including Kell Park chickens can traditionally be seen roaming around. However, most of them had been removed because of the reserve but it's impact can still be seen aas there are painiting dedicated to them within the park and the village's logo is a rooster.
